When I logged my first honest week, food wasn’t the biggest problem. The oil, the sugar and the drinks were.

Oil

One tablespoon of palm or vegetable oil is about 120 calories. A pot of stew or egusi can easily carry 10–15 tablespoons. Measure it once and you will be surprised.

Sugar

Three cubes in tea, twice a day, plus condensed milk — that’s a small meal every day, in liquid form.

Drinks

  • •A bottle of malt: ~230 kcal
  • •A 35cl soft drink: ~150 kcal
  • •A glass of Chapman: ~250 kcal
  • •Unsweetened zobo with ginger: ~15 kcal
My go-to: cold water with lime, or unsweetened zobo.
